"The Drillers are not aware that something precious must be sacrificed." Oh, this rings true. This piece is so good, Julie. And I love that last line. I drew a breath, too, and cast my eyes to the field lit by gold light out my window this morning.
I loved it, Julie, especially the imagery. I’m not going to forget the lines which describe the monsters of another era awakening as the driller drills.
Oooh, Julie! I loved this piece. The tone and the narrative voice, and the refrain: "Humans are bound by time." Are we ever! Once in a yoga class someone said that one of her teachers had said that the biggest block to enlightenment is a belief in time. I don't know whether or not I agree with that, but I enjoyed it as a statement. I look forward to reading more pieces from this work of yours!
The funnel of time running through deep history to the foreman and his family invites my curiosity about what one person can do in the midst of the general disaster. Maybe he does not wonder about that yet, but I hope he will!
This is powerful and the language is rich and dark as the 500 year old topsoil you describe. I’m intrigued about the rest of the novel you excavated this from. Hopefully you revisit it.
Love your fine style, Julie. Been a foreman 280 down in frozen clay. Dynamite and death. Walked away to life, to restack you. ('cos you led me to Suzanne)....

It is vast, grand and authoritative arriving at the uneasy specificity of that great granddaughter waiting her turn in the cosmic green room.
She is not going to be pleased and this is not going to end happily.
Cue Daniel Day Lewis walking out to his pickup.
I thoroughly enjoyed this it hits home here in Western Pa, where the fracking trucks have recently begun to tear up the roads again. Thanks!
So so good!

Love this! Looking forward to the serial.

Wow! Well done Julie, this is amazing. I look forward to reading more.
I'm excited to see where this leads, Julie. You are setting up a great story, with history and survival clearly at odds with one another.
